Internship: Seagrass-Microbe Interactions

Seagrasses form the foundation of many ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico, providing ecological, economic, and cultural benefits to local communities. However, seagrasses are declining worldwide, and there are many challenges associated with seagrass restoration.

In this internship, one UF undergraduate student will gain hands-on experience with research related to seagrass ecology and seagrass-microbe interactions, focusing on research questions that are directly related to seagrass restoration methods. The main mentor for this project will be Dr. Jamila Roth (postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Julie Meyer’s lab and Dr. Laura Reynolds’s lab).

This internship will provide

  • A stipend of $1,200 awarded upon completion of internship
  • Experience conducting scientific research
  • Experience with coastal science research methods, data analysis, and science communication
  • Opportunity for class credits if desired
  • Opportunities for independent projects

Expectations

  • Contribute on average 6-10 hours per week to this project throughout the Fall 2025 semester. Some weeks will be more intensive while other weeks will be less intensive.
  • Assist with research related to seagrass ecology and seagrass-microbe interactions. Duties will include monitoring experiments, processing samples in the laboratory, and analyzing data.
  • Engage in local science education and community clean-up events.
  • Complete a final project (e.g., poster, presentation, video, blog post).

Minimum qualifications

  • Experience or strong interest in scientific research
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred qualifications

  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
  • Ability to swim and spend time outdoors for field work
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Participation in the Gulf Scholars Medallion Program

Eligibility

This opportunity is available to full-time undergraduate students from any major at the University of Florida that are in good academic standing in accordance with the University’s policies.
