0-3 credits Experiential Learning + Gulf Impact Project

This is your chance to dive deep into real-world challenges and make a tangible difference in Gulf communities. Whether you’re interested in interning with a coastal conservation group, conducting impactful research, or engaging with local leaders, there’s a path for you. This project will help you connect your learning experiences in a cohesive manner. This is your project, so let your skills, your work, your research, and your personality shine!

Minimum requirement of 130 hours for all Experiential Learning opportunities. Students must be enrolled in 0-3 credits of IDS 4940 during the semester of their approved experiential learning opportunity. Professor Burton enrolls students manually in the right section of the course, so please check with her once you have your opportunity selected.

Go a step further. Pursue the Gulf Scholars Medallion

The Gulf Scholars Medallion recognizes students who go beyond academic requirements to become active members of the Gulf Scholars community. Medallion recipients participate in cohort meetings, build relationships with fellow scholars and community partners, engage with visiting speakers, and share their work publicly. The medallion celebrates students who contribute to the intellectual life of the program while developing the communication and leadership skills needed to serve Gulf communities.

To earn the medallion, you are required to participate in 4 Gulf-related events or activities. These can be completed at any time during your undergraduate experience at UF. We send weekly Canvas announcements advertising these opportunities.

  • Two Gulf Scholars group meetings. These group meetings will include team building, career talks, mentoring sessions, and professional development workshops on topics like effective civic engagement, science communication, and conflict management. 
  • Two Gulf Scholars public programs or planned excursions 

Medallion recipients must also present their work in a public forum, which could be the annual Gulf Scholars Conference, the Bob Graham Center Research Symposium, one of our Gulf Impact Project Showcases, or other presentation avenues.
