For students

Communities along the Gulf are facing complex environmental, health, and social challenges – all of which are exacerbated by climate change. UF Gulf Scholars is an exciting new opportunity to earn your degree while doing meaningful work to promote stewardship, resiliency, and innovation in communities around the Gulf.

Challenges facing the Gulf are complex and will take leaders from many disciplines, and with diverse lived experiences to solve. Students from any major are encouraged to enroll. We will work with you to ensure your Gulf Scholars experience fits with your personal and professional goals post-graduation.

How and when can I enroll?

Enrollment in the program will officially open Fall 2024, while the first academic courses will be taught Spring 2025. Please fill out this form so you can be the first to hear about enrollment dates and how to get started.

What are the program requirements?

Gulf Scholars will have the chance to take Gulf-focused coursework; participate in internships, research projects, field excursions, and more; network with professionals and peers from many academic backgrounds; and work with faculty mentors and community partners on Gulf Impact Projects. Once enrolled, students will attend an on-campus orientation to learn more about specific requirements for the program.

The program is designed to accommodate diverse academic interests and career goals related to the Gulf of Mexico. To meet all requirements, we recommend that students enroll with at least four semesters left at UF. However, we are willing to work with those who are closer to graduation.

Students who complete all requirements will receive a certificate from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as well as a UF Gulf Scholars medallion.
