These grants are designed to support innovative projects and enhance student engagement with the Gulf of Mexico’s diverse challenges and opportunities.
During the field excursion, which takes place June 11-15, 2024, students will interview residents of Pensacola, Florida who were impacted by several toxic waste sites, including one dubbed “Mount Dioxin.”

These classes, which range from general education to upper division, will expose students from various majors to complex challenges facing Gulf communities, such as sea level rise, increased urban development, and socioeconomic disparities.
UF Gulf Scholars will bring new Gulf-focused academic courses and public programs, experiential and place-based learning opportunities, and support for faculty-mentored Gulf Impact Projects to UF.

Selected students will work with seasoned oral historians to interview residents of Pensacola, Florida who were impacted by several toxic waste sites.
Recipients will receive $4,000 for new courses and $2,000 for the enhancement of existing courses related to the Gulf of Mexico.
